SPARTA — Maurice Nixon, 91, of Sparta, brother of a Normal man, passed away Sunday (Jan. 11, 2015) at the Sparta Community Hospital.
He was born Nov. 10, 1923, in Chester, to Maurice C. and Selma M. Bollinger Nixon. Maurice married Ruth S. Sprengel on July 28, 1946, in Chester. She preceded him in death on May 1, 2010.
Maurice served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Maurice retired from GTE after working there for 36 years as a switching technician. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Sparta Fire Department in the past. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Steeleville, Steeleville American Legion Post 480 for 70 years, and Chester Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3553.
Maurice is survived by his two sons, Maurice W. (Connie) Nixon, Sparta, and John S. (Julie) Nixon, Normal; one brother, Roland G. (Lorraine) Nixon, San Diego, Calif.; and one grandson, John Nixon.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one brother, Vernon E. Nixon; two sisters, Doris Jean Nixon and Jessie C. Nixon; and sister-in-law, Imogene Nixon.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Steeleville. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the McDaniel & Lee Family Funeral Home in Sparta and from 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the church. Interment will be at Caledonia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
