WAPELLA - Merle C. “Buddy” Mearida, 83, Wapella, died at 12:30 p.m. Monday (Feb. 6, 2006) at the family residence.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with J. Kent Hickerson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Clinton, with military honors. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Merle C. Mearida memorial fund.
He was born Nov. 3, 1922, at Wapella, to Thomas Atlas and Dolly Leota Ruble Mearida. He married Rosa M. Lowery on June 28, 1941, at St. Louis, Mo. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Merle (Sharon) Mearida, Clinton, and Ronald (Vicki) Mearida, Wapella; two daughters, Nancy (Larry) Scott, Bloomington, and Barbara (Allen) Pence, Wapella; two sisters, Fern Day, Clinton, and Eva Sojka, Wapella; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Billy Mearida; and one sister.
He was an Army veteran and received two Bronze Stars in World War II. He was a member of V.F.W., American Legion and was a former member of Wapella Fire Department and Wapella Village Board.
He owned and operated Mearida Trucking until his retirement. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother and will be missed by all who knew him. The greatest joys of his life were his grandchildren and his dog, Sammy.
