DWIGHT — Michael L. Piper, 67, of Dwight, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon (Jan. 31, 2014) at his residence.
His visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hager Memorial Home, Dwight. His funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Herscher, with a one-hour visitation prior to service. The Rev. Rod Serbus will officiate. Burial will follow at Herscher Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Born July 16, 1946, in Kankakee, Michael was the son of William and Elma Winterroth Piper. He graduated from Herscher High School and Northern Illinois University. He married Deborah Lovell on July 22, 1967, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Cabery.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Deborah; three sons, Troy (Jocelyn) Piper, Rochester; Derek Piper, Dwight; and Jason Piper, Herscher; and eight grandchildren, Colton and Riley Piper, Jaimee Romdeka, Jake Piper, Alicia and Justin Andrews, Amanda Piper and Troy McCreery.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Michael was a financial adviser for many years and retired from Smith Barney. He was very actively involved in the community of Herscher. He served as grand marshal of its Labor Day Parade in 2008. He was Man of the Year for the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as an elder for Trinity Lutheran Church and as a village trustee. He was the first president of the Herscher High School Athletic Boosters. He and Debbie were proud to be founders of the Downtown Beautification Program.
Mike's motto was "Faith, family, friends and football."
Mike was a die-hard New York Yankees fan, an avid golfer and enjoyed watching Rochester and Herscher high school football.
