NORMAL - Paul Herman Giese, 85, Normal, died at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 27, 2005) at Heritage Manor, Normal.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Kibler-Smith Memorial Home, Bloomington. His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bloomington. Pastor Chad Lueck will officiate. Interment will be at Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 635. Kibler-Smith Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or to the Alzheimer's Association in his memory.
Paul was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Bloomington, a son of Herman M. and Pauline Boeker Giese.
A lifelong resident of Bloomington-Normal, Paul worked at State Farm Insurance Cos. for 39 years as an accountant and retired in 1985 as an assistant vice president in life accounting. He was a chartered life underwriter and also involved in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
During World War II, Paul served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater, participating in many actions across the Pacific and the invasion of Iwo Jima. While aboard ship there, he witnessed the Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi, and was proud to have been able to witness history in the making.
Paul was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was active in church life.
He married Norma June Nuckels on Feb. 27, 1944, in Bloomington. She survives.
In addition to his wife, Norma Giese, Normal, Paul is survived by three daughters, Carol (Bob) Grunewald, Normal; Susan Conlon, Normal; and Laurie (Mike) Hockenberry, Bloomington; two grandsons, Paul (Kim) Sloan, Edwardsville, and Brett Hockenberry, Bloomington; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Lauren Sloan, Edwardsville; and a sister, Louise Hester, Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
