MORTON - The Rev. James R. Geil, 60, of 1070 E. Jackson St., Morton, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday (June 26, 2007) at his home.

He was born March 26, 1947, in Rochester, N.Y., a son of Robert and Marion Lackey Geil. He married Helen Robbins on April 10, 1976, in Alton.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Geil, Morton; three sons, Rob Geil, St. Louis, Mo.; and Tim Geil (Cindy Rademaker-Geil) and Nate Geil, both of Morton; two brothers, Ed (Becky) Geil, Macedon, N.Y., and Scott Geil, Palmyra, N.Y.; and two sisters, Ruth Kates, Naples, Fla., and Jackie Hackett, Palmyra, N.Y.

He graduated from Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo., in 1974, and was working on his master's degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Mo.

He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He served aboard the USS Bradley; and he was a member of American Legion Post 318, in Morton.

A minister for 33 years, Jim served as a youth pastor in Hartford and Aurora. He then served as a senior pastor at churches in Bunker Hill; Union City, Ind.; Valparaiso, Ind.; Olney; Hannibal, Mo.; Trenton, Mo.; and St. Louis. He had been the senior pastor at Morton Assembly of God since February of 2001.

Jim was a caring, loving husband to Helen. He took great pride in being involved and influential in the lives of his three sons. Through his sense of humor and love for people, he enjoyed fellowship with his congregations and friends. Even though he had a lot of trials and difficulties, he steadfastly served the Lord.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at his church, with the Rev. Larry Griswold and the Rev. Dennis Brannon officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 12 to 12:45 p.m. Saturday, both at the church. Burial, with graveside military services, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home in Morton is handling arrangements.
