DOWNS - Former longtime municipal band director and teacher of Tri-Valley School, Robert John Pierce, 67, of Sun City West, Ariz., died Jan. 30, 2006, of complications from a brain tumor.
Robert was born in Dwight. His parents were Dorothy and Chester Pierce. Robert is survived by his wife, Gayle; daughter, Jill Campbell; son, Jon Pierce; grandchildren, Cari and Bradley Campbell; brother, Richard Pierce; and former wife, Judy Pierce.
Robert was a graduate of Illinois State Normal University in music and taught music in the Tri-Valley school system in Downs for 14 years. He was a longtime director of the Bloomington Municipal Band and the Lamplighter Dance Band in Bloomington, performing weekly at the Tiara Ballroom. As an accomplished musician, he also loved to compose and arrange music as well. His grandson, Brad, is following in his footsteps as an excellent saxophone musician, already winning several awards from school and contests. His granddaughter, Cari, also loves music, not as a musician but as a dancer.
Robert also worked for the City of Bloomington in the McLean County Building and Zoning department and for South Metropolitan Association as the assistant to the Finance Director. After moving to Sun City West, Robert worked for Sun Village Association in Surprise as part-time compliance coordinator, then became full-time Director before he retired due to illness.
A memorial service was held Saturday in Sun City West. A memorial fund has been established at the Tri-Valley School District and the proceeds will be used to benefit the music department and it's students.
