BLOOMINGTON Shirley E. Simpson, 81, 800 N. Market St., Knoxville, formerly of the Coldbrook area, died at 4:20 p.m. Monday (Dec. 12, 2005) at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

She was born Sept. 2, 1924, in Monmouth, the daughter of Stanley H. and Marye C. Howard Merion. She married Walter G. Simpson on March 10, 1948, in Monmouth. He preceded her in death on July 5, 1997.

She is survived by a son, Bill (Rose) Simpson, Bloomington; a daughter-in-law, Sue Simpson, Rio; a sister, Carol (Ben) Lee, Monmouth; and three grandsons, Brad, Mark, and Ty Simpson. She was preceded in death by a son, Greg Simpson, on Dec. 21, 2004, and by one grandson.

She owned and operated the Short Stop Antique Shop in rural Galesburg. She also farmed along with her husband in Coldbrook Township.

She graduated from Monmouth High School in 1942 and attended Monmouth College. She was a member of the Coldbrook Christian Church. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society of the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville.

She served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II. She was a Seaman First Class.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Coldbrook Christian Church with the Rev. Becky Ingram officiating. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
