NORMAL - Wayne Townley, 78, Normal, died at 7:20 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 11, 2007) at his home.
A private family committal service will be at Park Hill Cemetery on Friday afternoon. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church of Normal. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Rev. Larry Gaylord will officiate. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity and/or the First Presbyterian Church of Normal. Kibler-Smith Memorial Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.
Wayne was born Jan. 9, 1929. He was the son of Wayne C. and Isabelle Townley. He was educated in Bloomington public schools, graduating from BHS in 1946. Wayne was awarded a degree in 1950 from Illinois Wesleyan and a LLB in 1952 from the University of Illinois' College of Law. He was admitted to the Bar in May of 1952.
Wayne entered active duty - first lieutenant in the Air Force as a Judge Advocate from 1952-53 in Waco, Texas. He returned to Bloomington and entered private practice with his father. He married his wife, Marilyn, in June 1953.
He was elected in 1956 and again in 1960 as the state's attorney of McLean County. In 1962, he was elected associate circuit judge. In 1970, he was elected circuit court judge until he retired Sept. 30, 1992. He was recalled to the bench for just over a year to fill an additional judgeship.
Judge Townley served on the following committees: 1972-1977, Illinois Commission on Children; 1977-1982, Illinois Law Enforcement Commission (vice chairman); 1981-1987, Illinois Judicial Conference (chairman of executive committee 1983-85); and 1988-1992, Judicial Education Sub committee (vice chairman 1991-1992). He was a faculty member of numerous III Judicial Conference continuing education programs and certified as a mediator and arbitration for the 11th Judicial Circuit. He was president of McLean County Bar Association, president of Friends of Milner Library, and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Normal, the Young Men's Club and the Longfellow Club.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Marilyn Townley, and four children, Patricia (the Rev. Scott) Carlson, Olney; Dan (Birgit) Townley, Rye, N.Y.; Sarah (Tom) Hill, Charlotte, N.C.; and Carol (Dr. James) Teener, Ann Arbor, Mich. Dan is a partner in the New York law firm of Davis, Polk and Wardwell, continuing a legal tradition back from Wayne's father and grandfather.
Wayne is survived by 12 grandchildren, Laura, Paul and Tim Carlson; Henry, David and Charlotte Townley; Emily, Katherine and Robby Hill; and Sam, Max and Jack Teener. His is also survived by his brother, Richard, Carol Stream.
