Police investigate the scene where a car struck a child riding a scooter Thursday evening at Empire and Evans streets in Bloomington.

BLOOMINGTON — A young boy was in critical condition Friday in a Peoria hospital after being struck by a car Thursday at the intersection of Evans and Empire streets, Bloomington, police said.

An officer at the scene said about 4:45 p.m. the boy was struck while riding an electric scooter.

Additional details of what happened were not released Friday.

The boy, whom police declined to identify further, was taken to OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, and later transferred to a Peoria hospital.

There were no reports of anyone else being injured.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the boy was interviewed and released without citation or arrest, police said.

A police accident reconstruction unit was called to the scene, and Empire between Clinton and McLean streets was closed to traffic until about 8:30 p.m. The area was cordoned off during the investigation, and a child-sized scooter could be seen within the area surrounded by police tape.

The incident remains under police investigation.
