WASHINGTON — A crash involving a semitrailer truck and a car Wednesday near Washington killed a woman riding in the car and injured both drivers.

The truck collided with the car about 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of Spring Creek Road and McCluggage Road/U.S. 24 west of Washington, according to preliminary reports from the Illinois State Police.

Linda Bedwell, 74, of Washington was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tazewell County Coroner’s Office. As autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Jerry Bedwell, 76, also of Washington, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. He was driving the car north on Spring Creek Road at the time of the crash.

Francis Wesselhoff, 47, of Gridley, who was driving the semi east on McCuggage Road, was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

The eastbound lanes of McCluggage were closed for several hours for cleanup and investigation.

Washington fire and police departments, Northern Tazewell Fire Department and the Tazewell County sheriff's and coroner's offices also responded to the crash.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and Washington Public Works also assisted.

The crash remains under investigation by state police and the coroner's office.
