Randall lineback

BLOOMINGTON — Miller Park Zoo has gone from "brrr" to "aww" with the addition of a Randall Lineback purebred heifer.

Indigo, a 1-year-old female who hasn't calved, is from a critically rare breed with fewer than 400 animals distributed among a few herds, according to a city statement.

The animal came from a private breeder in Ohio and is on exhibit near the reindeer and children's zoo.

Miller Park Zoo is the fourth U.S. zoo to exhibit the breed.

Randall Lineback is a purebred remnant of lineback-patterned cattle once common in New England, the statement said. Though the origins of the breed are not clear, it is likely to have originated in New England from a combination of Dutch, English and French cattle.

Historically, they were used for dairy, beef and oxen.
