A maintenance worker for RCS Properties exits a six-unit apartment complex that was damaged after fire broke out in a first-floor unit Friday at 1410 Croxton Ave.

BLOOMINGTON — Residents of a six-unit apartment complex at 1410 Croxton Ave. escaped injury in a Friday morning fire that remains under investigation.

Bloomington firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 5 a.m. It was centered in a first-floor unit, but left all the other apartments with smoke damage and another with fire damage, said Bloomington Fire Department spokesman Stuart Blade.

The fire was brought under control by 5:44 a.m. The fire was called in by a resident who reported flames in the building, said BFD.

The availability of working smoke alarms allowed residents to safely leave the building before firefighters arrived, noted Blade. The Red Cross was notified and assistance was provided to seven residents, he said.

Damage to the building is estimated at $50,000. The cause has not yet been determined.
