BLOOMINGTON — Several Pantagraph area school districts, including McLean County Unit 5, have canceled classes Monday because of frigid weather and icy roads in rural areas.

As of 7 p.m. Sunday, the list also includes Stanford-based Olympia, Clinton, Heyworth, El Paso-Gridley, LeRoy, Tri-Valley, Flanagan, Prairie Central, Pontiac Elementary #429 and Pontiac Township High School.

The Regional Alternative School in Bloomington also is closed as are schools in the Gibson City-based GCMS district.

The temperature in Bloomington-Normal was minus 4 degrees at 6 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory until 10 a.m. Monday because wind chill values will be between 15 and 25 degrees below zero.

The advisory means that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in less than 30 minutes and hypothermia can develop if protective clothing is not worn, including hats and gloves and layers of clothing.

The NWS urges people to avoid being outdoors for any prolonged period of time.
