BLOOMINGTON - A Bloomington man accused of murdering his girlfriend's 3-year-old son in April made a brief court appearance Friday.
Joe Mendez, 32, faces three counts of first degree murder and aggravated battery to a child in the death of Logan Bratton. An autopsy revealed that the child died of severe head trauma.
Public defender Amy Davis asked for a status hearing in about two months to give the defense time to review extensive materials in the case. She said her office recently received about 70 additional pages of documents and several disks containing evidence.
Judge Scott Drazewski set a July 20 hearing date. An interpreter relayed the court proceedings to Mendez who was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, according to police.
Prosecutors said in an earlier hearing that Mendez offered several versions of events leading to the death of his girlfriend's child, including one in which the boy fell from a bunk bed.
Mendez eventually told police he struck the child with his hand and the boy hit his head on the floor or another object during a fall backwards, according to the state.
Mendez was returned to jail in lieu of $100,000 on the charges.
