CHICAGO - A convicted sex offender has pleaded not guilty to killing his girlfriend's two young sons and sexually assaulting her daughter, officials said Monday.
Brian Gilbert, 36, is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated criminal sexual assault. He entered the not guilty plea during a hearing Monday, said Andy Conklin, spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.
Prosecutors allege Gilbert beat and fatally stabbed his girlfriend's 14-year-old and 12-year-old sons at her South Side apartment in late April during an argument about chores. He is also accused of stabbing and sexually assaulting her 13-year-old daughter. The children's mother was not home at the time of the attack.
Police say Gilbert made a videotaped confession and told authorities where they could find a steak knife he'd used to stab the children.
The Associated Press is not identifying the family members to protect the identity of the 13-year-old girl, an alleged sexual assault victim.
Gilbert could face the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder. He was convicted in 1998 of predatory criminal sexual assault for assaulting a family member.
He is being held without bond. His next court appearance is July 17.
