More dogs from South coming here

BLOOMINGTON - At least 25 more dogs from the hurricane-ravaged South will be coming to find new homes in Bloomington-Normal.

Dave Severino, president of the Humane Society of Central Illinois, and Maury Barry, vice president of the society, are traveling to Jackson, Miss., to rescue dogs that had been abandoned in Gulfport, Miss., Barry said.

"They have 450 dogs in a facility the size of ours," he said. "We're bringing 25 mature dogs and some puppies."

Severino and Barry planned to leave Tuesday or today. Barry said some of the dogs will be ready for adoption at the Humane Society on Friday.

"These dogs have already been quarantined," he said, unlike the 39 dogs and 22 cats the society rescued from the area in September.

"Those dogs were taken off the street," Barry said, so they had to be quarantined in Bloomington before they could be adopted.

The society has less than a dozen of those animals still available for adoption, he said. "These are great dogs. - They're so grateful."

Barry said conditions aren't getting better for many areas around New Orleans. Some dogs have gone too long without food and are becoming wild and aggressive and are being shot.

"There are tens of thousands that still need help," he said.

Shelters in the South also are having a tough time meeting needs, Barry said. Some are still without power and supplies.

Three Twin City businessmen, who wished to remain anonymous, organized a trip to a makeshift animal rescue center in New Orleans three weeks ago, Barry said. They took down a generator, furnace, refrigerator, lighting system, batteries, blankets and disposable lasagna pans that could be used for litter boxes.

"The stuff has helped a lot," Barry said.

Severino and Barry are taking a washer and dryer to the Jackson, Miss., shelter.

"The only way we can go down again is through the generosity of people here," Barry said.
