Scott Richardson's column this past Sunday concerning the town of Normal not designating a temporary route around the closure of Constitution Trail was very well written ("Trail needs designated detour," Viewpoint, Page C3).
For way too long, both of our cities have not stepped forward to promote alternative transportation to the automobile.
There has been a very broad interpretation of a very poorly decided Supreme Court case that has been used way too long as an excuse.
Many other towns and cities in Illinois are moving forward with bike and pedestrian routes making it much easier for people to use these forms of transportation.
If both our cities make an attempt to help people get out of their vehicles and on their feet or bicycle the response might surprise all of us.
