Many cities have banned smoking in restaurants and bars. Bloomington and Normal will someday. Let's be leaders among cities and towns and do it now.
When we go into restaurants and bars we expect pure food and drink, sanitary dishes, silver and glasses. Why not have clean air as well? Smoking kills 400,000 people each year. The employees of the restaurants and bars have a right to work in a healthy environment. The recent poll of the Bloomington-Normal area found that the majority of people back a ban on smoking. Religious groups are now getting behind the movement to ban smoking. There are many people that would go out more if they did not have to breathe cigarette smoke.
The state and federal governments will never get it done. It is now up to our councilpersons of Bloomington and Normal to get it done.
Please don't just have a partial ban such as no smoking in restaurants but allow it in bars, because there is little distinction between the two.
