We have a bill — House Bill 148 — in our state Legislature that would give law-abiding Illinois residents their right to concealed carry.
As a registered Republican, I was surprised to find that a Democrat, Brandon Phelps introduced this bill and that there are several Democrats downstate who are supporting this.
The problem is the Chicago Democrats and our Democrat governor, Pat Quinn, who will veto this bill if he gets the chance. I’m disappointed at some of the lack of support by some of my Republican representatives, as my National Rifle Association has kept me informed through emails.
Phelps stated, “Keeping concealed weapons from those who follow the law is a clear infringement on constitutional rights. I will join my colleagues from both sides of the aisle and fight hard for this legislation to pass.”
Phelps is a true American! There is an estimated 1.3 million gun owners with firearms owner’s identification cards in Illinois and our state is hurting for money. This bill states that residents must apply for a permit that will cost $100 before they can carry and pay $75 each year for renewal.
Passing HB 148 would not only save innocent lives that are in danger but will greatly help our state financially.
