I do not agree with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois continuing to deny coverage for 3D mammography. A study in Norway with over 13,000 women found that when radiologists had access to both the 2D and 3D exams, they detected 40 percent more cases of invasive breast cancer than when they saw only the 2D exams. A study including 13 U.S. hospitals suggests similar findings, as reported in the June 25 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
In my opinion, it is time for Blue Cross/Blue Shield to start approving coverage for 3D mammography. I feel the lives of many women will be improved by 3D mammography, and I hate to think that Blue Cross/Blue Shield’s denial of coverage could lead to some women not being able to afford the test, and suffering undetected cancer and/or death.
