I am appalled that Alderman Gibson would even suggest repealing the smoking ban. Because the governor has not signed the statewide ban yet, Gibson's "reason" is not valid.
If the statewide ban is not signed, the lack of a local smoking ban could endanger the health and safety of many nonsmokers. Even if the statewide bill is signed, Bloomington will still need the law in the books should the city council decide on greater smoking restrictions (such as protecting the health and safety of nonsmoking guests and employees of hotels).
I strongly urge readers to contact their city council representatives and ask that they not support the ban repeal and burn the bridge to a smoke-free Bloomington.
