I am a registered Republican - a conservative Republican. But I believe the GOP is losing its base because of the failed leadership of George W. Bush, John McCain, et al. on the issue of illegal aliens.

While my wife and I voted straight Republican tickets in the last two elections, we will stay at home in 2008 if the current legislation is passed.

The current laws, if enforced, would be preferable to the bad legislation that is now on the table.

It is illegal to hire undocumented alien trespassers. Just enforce the current laws regarding employment, build a fence - as already required - and starve out the trespassers.

Once we see that the federal government is willing to enforce current laws, we will get behind legislation that actually controls legal immigration - as long as the policy of "chain immigration" is discontinued and new immigrants are selected on the basis of their ability to come here, be gainfully employed and assimilate into our culture.

Anything short of that is a breach of contract and will result in the destruction of this country.

If having millions of low-educated, unskilled workers is what is needed to have a vibrant economy, then please tell us why that approach has not worked for Mexico and other Third World nations.
