Bloomington's Holton Home residents can now gather under a picnic shelter to enjoy their community garden. This is just in time for both the growing season and upcoming Open House/Celebration hosted by the Bloomington Housing Authority on June 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Hinshaw Avenue.
Thanks for a generous grant from Nicor Gas, as well as initiative from Todd Vincent and Mercy Davison whose efforts organized the plan for the site and its construction. Todd, in particular, lent actual muscle and coordinated other volunteers to build the shelter.
I know what an important milestone this is for attracting residents to their neighborhood garden. I had the pleasure of working with Todd and Mercy, as well as the BHA and McLean County Master Gardeners, during Leadership McLean County 2005-6.
Let's hope there is a great turnout for the event and many visits to the shelter and garden throughout the summer.
