The League of Women Voters would like to thank The Pantagraph for all that you do to keep the people of McLean County informed on public issues. We count on you to attend the board and council meetings that we cannot attend. We also count on you to bring us information about the people who are running for public office.
That is why I am confused about the loss of printed discourse on the upcoming sheriff's race. This is an extremely important post and citizens are hungry for information about the candidates.
Those letters to the editor let us get a variety of perspectives on each candidate. We learn not only what they have to say about themselves, but also what numerous individuals that interact with them in different ways have to say about them. As citizens, we cannot know everything about the candidates for office. But when we are presented with a variety of personal testimonials, we begin to see what that person is all about. We begin to be able to make an educated choice. And isn't that what democracy is all about?
But now that information about each candidate is just a little harder for some of us to obtain and not available at all to others of us.
The League of Women Voters would like to request that you resume publishing candidate letters so that the public can have access to the information they need to make educated decisions about their government.
