Recently, there have been concerns voiced about traffic near the high schools. Both new Unit 5 schools have a lot of traffic when school is getting out. There are people in a hurry and some act like they are in too much of a hurry to wait for others.
There is a simple, yet risky solution. Charge more for parking.
If the rate for parking is raised, fewer students would drive and park their cars at school. If the rate is set by demand, then fewer students would be getting into accidents with their cars.
If the rate was raised, then enforcement officers could be paid for out of those funds. If the rate was raised, that money could be used to lower some other costs of education at those schools.
Free or low-cost parking is not a right. That parking space is not owned by the student. Raise the rate until there is a safe amount of traffic going in and out of the parking lots. That is all it would take.
