I am very sorry to learn of Ms. P.A. "Sue" Berglund resigning from her McLean County Board position ("Berglund resigns over smoking ban vote delay," Sept. 7).
Trust me I can relate to Ms. Berglund's frustrations regarding the board slow-playing the smoking ban bill.
Back in 1986 as a young mayor of Midland City, Ala., I introduced the same to our city council and got hundreds to sign a petition to send to our Alabama governor.
Many citizens in my city and the majority of my city council members thought the "funny farm" wagon should take me away.
I painfully endured without resigning.
McLean County will suffer with the resignation of Ms. Berglund. Her heart was for promoting public health.
Midland City and my state of Alabama are still, as Ms. Berglund says, "sitting on the pot."
No public clean air act in either.
Please remember Alabama is the home of Gomer, Goober and Gump.
However, these fictional characters would be for protecting us against toxic secondhand smoke, especially our innocent kids.
Don't you think?
