Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) is being proposed for Illinois and possibly McLean County. Springfield is abuzz with a permitting law (HB 2625), currently liked by Gov. Quinn and both House Speaker Michael Madigan and Attorney General Lisa Madigan. They have been hoodwinked into thinking this toothless bill will protect our environment, and that it will bring jobs for local people.
Alarmed by the stories of harm done to people, livestock, water and soil from states where hydrofracking for unnaturally extracted gas has polluted both ground and air, I have been studying the science of the process and am horrified at the damage it causes. It’s a public health issue.
Both Senate (SB 1418) and House (HB 3086) bills call for a two-year moratorium on fracking with an independent, science-based investigative task force to study the impacts of fracking before drilling begins. Several other states have passed moratoria successfully. We, too, can prevent irreparable harm to our own home. Please ask our state legislators, Sen. Bill Brady and Rep. Dan Brady, to support the moratorium bills in their respective branches.
