The Town of Normal is on a spending binge that will give taxpayers a major hangover.
Current spending will require borrowing, costing taxpayers $144 million to repay! Normal is incurring expenses on the Bank of Illinois project that will exceed $5 million. They recently bailed out another bank, buying property on Vernon Avenue that by existing ordnance could only have been rebuilt as residential. If sold for a dollar like the ISSCS property, the taxpayer cost may exceed $250,000.
I ask, when did government get in the business of guaranteeing bad loans for banks? They like banks so well, they are even funding a temporary bank. A line is forming. The latest is Pet Supply.
Normal taxpayers are already facing increases in property taxes, water bills and new fees for storm water. If citizens do not react and voice their concerns about the way Normal is being managed, then prepare yourself for an avalanche of increases in fees and taxes.
Ask about the cost the town is spending for other bank facilities. Current levels of administration spending are certain to reduce the town's bond rating, resulting in higher interest cost for required borrowing.
Bureaucrats are often characterized as spending like “drunken sailors.” In defense, I would at least observe that they pay for their own intoxication; unlike elected officials that seem to be intoxicated by spending our money. Normal currently has two conservative council members. Taxpayers need to be concerned by the others, that I will characterize as “The six pack;” who are binging on Monday nights. I'm mad and hope you are mad, too.
As for sailors and our military: “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." - George Orwell.
