Donald Trump's administration does not recognize the concept of democracy. He has hired only loyal cronies, signed unconstitutional laws, operated with unprecedented conflicts of interest, fired the chief of the investigation into his administration, leaked classified information to an enemy, blamed the media for everything and taken responsibility for nothing.
The man has no sense of reality, let alone an understanding of the job of a president: the democratic leader of one branch of government, not an autonomous CEO.
Regardless, Trump himself is not the problem. There are many other people in the U.S. who share his qualities, yet manage to live with little harm to society. But they are not president.
The real threat here is that Republican leadership in Congress continues to go along with his assault on our democracy, even as it gets worse and worse and imperils the very fabric of our cherished institutions. This party is supposed to be patriotic, but they are not standing up to unprecedented violations of the document that has made this country great: the Constitution. They seem to be OK with allowing a virtual dictator, as long as they get their agenda, like tax cuts for the rich.
We as citizens need to hold accountable our representatives in Congress who have shown no backbone to “check and balance” the reckless executive branch at this critical time in our nation’s history.
