PAXTON - Capt. Robert Bane, a 19-year veteran with Paxton's police department, will take over as police chief May 12 when current Police Chief Kenneth Mutchmore retires.
Bane, who now holds the department's second-highest position, has served 18 years as youth officer for Paxton's police force.
Mutchmore has served Paxton for 35 years, including the last eight as chief. He gave no specific reason for his retirement, saying only that he feels the time is right to relax more and enjoy his family.
Mutchmore said he is looking forward to moving the police department into a new facility before his retirement. The department will be part of the city-owned building on north Illinois 45, which previously housed Birkey's Farm Store.
He said the new police headquarters should ready for occupancy by mid-March.
