BLOOMINGTON - The name of the Bloomington hockey team will be one of five choices but it is up to you to decide which one.
Voting for the five choices ends at 5 p.m. on Friday.
The options for the Bloomington United Hockey League team that will take the ice next fall at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum are the 66ers, Bolts, Bullfrogs, Firestorm and Prairie Thunder.
In selecting the five, the contest panel tried to find names that would be a strong, unique name in the league and still be family friendly, said Jonell Kehias, marketing services manager for The Pantagraph. The contest panel who narrowed down the choices were a group of employees from The Pantagraph and the Coliseum management group, Central Illinois Arena Management.
The choices, such as the 66ers and the Prairie Thunder speak of the Bloomington-Normal area, she added.
"We also wanted something that had great art application for the jerseys," Kehias said. "Bolts of lighting make for a fun graphic and Firestorm is just a cool name."
They added the choice of Bullfrog because the panel wanted an animal that was unique to the hockey league, Kehias said.
The more than 2,300 entries submitted to the contest is exciting, said Beau Bradle, director of sales and marketing for the Coliseum managers.
"It is very encouraging for the team to have that many people interested in naming the team and in hockey," Bradle said.
Once duplicate names were sorted from the entries, Bradle said they had to narrow the list of 836 names down to five.
Originally, the contest panel thought they would narrow the list to three names but Bradle said it was hard to trim the list so five names were chosen instead.
After voting closes at the end of the week, the votes will be tallied and a team name will be announced at the end of the month, Bradle said. No specific date for an announcement has been made.
