LaSALLE — Chief Deputy Clerk Lori Bongartz has won the Democratic nomination to succeed her boss, longtime LaSalle County Clerk JoAnn Carretto.

In an unofficial tally of all 119 precincts reporting from Tuesday's primary election, Bongartz of Ottawa garnered 4,731 votes, or 66.14 percent, while challenger Vickey Leadingham of Sheridan received 2,422 votes, or 33.86 percent.

With no Republican candidate, Bongartz likely will win the seat in November.

In the treasurer's race, Democratic financial planner Nikena "Nikki" Baer of LaSalle led with 4,059, or 58.53 percent, over Kyle Fogle, a part-time Illinois Valley Community College and Aurora University instructor, who garnered 2,876 votes, or 41.47 percent.

Baer will face incumbent Treasurer Jim Spelich, who was the only Republican to file for the office he has held since 2014.

Carretto, a Democrat, announced in November that she would not seek re-election as county clerk, an office that she has held for a dozen years.

Bongartz has worked at the clerk's office for 29 years and currently serves as chief deputy clerk.
