PEORIA - Bishop Daniel R. Jenky announced Thursday the dismissal of the Rev. Monsignor Thomas R. Miller from the clergy.

The decision came to Jenky from the Vatican, said a statement from the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.

In 2004, a 36-year-old man accused Miller of abusing him in 1979 while Miller was assistant pastor at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Bloomington, according to Pantagraph files.

The dismissal takes effect immediately, and means Miller cannot do anything related to the clergy.

Miller will have 30 days after being notified of this decision to appeal, but the dismissal stands pending the appeal, the statement said. Miller also served in parishes in Danville and Peoria.

Before the case went to Rome, Jenky presented investigation results to the Diocesan Review Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria, who told the bishop the allegations seemed credible. The bishop then referred the case to Rome.
