URBANA - A Champaign police officer wounded during a shootout at a park last week left a local hospital Wednesday.
More than 300 area police, emergency workers and friends greeted 36-year-old Officer Shannon Bridges as she was wheeled out of Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Investigators say a gunman shot Bridges and two other officers June 7 in West Side Park as they checked out a report that someone had a gun at the park. Bridges was hit in the chest and had been hospitalized since.
The other officers, Deputy Chief John Murphy and Officer Jack Armstrong, were released from the hospital within hours of the shootout.
Police shot the suspect, 46-year-old Donnell Clemons, several times during the exchange. Clemons was still at the hospital Wednesday and listed in fair condition.
Clemons, who police say lived in his car and often parked at the park, has been charged with attempted murder.
and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
Because Champaign police were involved, the shootout is being investigated by officers from Urbana and other area law enforcement agencies.
