NORMAL - A 17-year-old man from Normal was charged Tuesday with hitting a woman in the back of the head with a landscaping rock and raping her in an incident that started as an attempt to steal marijuana, a prosecutor said.
Taurean D. Chambers, of the 600 block of Orlando Avenue, was in jail in lieu of posting $10,000 on charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault, home invasion, residential burglary, aggravated battery and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police were called to a mobile home in the 700 block of North Raab Road about 9:30 p.m. Monday, where a woman said she was sexually assaulted by a man who struck her in the head with a rock.
Assistant State's Attorney Sandra Thompson said a woman was outside a relative's home to smoke a cigarette when Chambers approached her and asked if she had any "weed." She tried to go inside the house and Chambers followed her, striking her on the back of the head twice with a landscaping rock.
The woman told police Chambers told her to remove her clothing and he raped her, took her cellular phone and money and fled, Thompson said.
Chambers initially denied forcing the woman to have sex with him, she said.
Chambers later said he went to the house to steal marijuana he thought was in the home, and he struck the woman with the rock when she told him there was none, Thompson said. Chambers told police she asked him if he wanted to have sex so he wouldn't hit her with the rock again, Thompson said.
The victim gave police a description of the man, and Chambers was arrested a short time later in the area of the mobile home park, said Normal police Sgt. Scott Johnson. Chambers eventually admitted the sex wasn't consensual, and he had the woman's cellular phone and money when he was arrested, Thompson said.
The woman was taken to BroMenn Regional Medical Center with lacerations to her head. Her condition was not available Tuesday morning.
