NORMAL — Braxton S. Slappey Jr., 76, of Normal, passed away at 7:34 a.m. July 9, 2019, at his home.
His memorial service will be at noon Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, Normal, with the Rev. Al McLaughlin officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Ministry and More or OSF Hospice. Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Braxton was born Sept. 21, 1942, in Jacksonville, Fla., the son of Braxton S. Sr. and Virginia Louise Lively Slappey. He married Wanda E. Amy on July 27, 1968, in Jacksonville, Fla. She survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Amy (John) Denham, Normal, and Holly (Chad) Allison, Downers Grove; two grandchildren, Laney and Max Allison; a sister, Margaret Lantz, Walled Lake, Mich.; a stepsister, Joan McIntyre, MacClenny, Fla.; a stepbrother, John Adam, Jacksonville, Fla.; a cousin, Susan (Raymond) Williams; numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Dorothy Slappey; and a stepbrother, James Adams.
Braxton served in the U.S. Air Force and graduated with a degree in economics from Jacksonville University in 1968. He worked for State Farm Insurance Cos. for over 35 years and received a CPCU designation in 1975.
Braxton was a ham radio operator and a member of the Central Illinois Radio Club. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Normal and the Hof Reunion Association. He also served on the Hudson Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
