Carcelia J. “Jay” Mathes, 85, of Normal, formerly of Terre Haute, Ind., passed away at 9:31 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 13, 2018) at her home.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Bloomington. Dr. Rev. Adrian Lamkin will officiate. Interment will be at Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington. She was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Rockport, Ind., daughter of Chester and Sara Stewart Rudy. She married Bobbie N. Mathes on Feb. 23, 1951, in Indiana. He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2013. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Aaron Peacher.
Surviving are her daughters, Caryn Mathes, Seattle, Wash.; Robin (David) Landry, Normal; and Michele Mathes, Bloomington; and one grandson, Langston Gunn, Bloomington.
Carcelia was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church for many years, and later Highland Baptist Church, both in Terre Haute, Ind., where she also was a member of the church choirs and taught Sunday school. She also enjoyed reading and traveling.
