Donald F. Ely, 92, of Cornell, passed away Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2018) at Evenglow Health Care, Pontiac.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Winterrowd Funeral Home, Streator, with the funeral at noon with full military honors conducted by members of Streator VFW and American Legion. Cremation rites will follow the service. Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Cornell Cemetery.
Donald was born March 26, 1926, in Pontiac, to Clarence and Elizabeth (Gernentz) Ely. He married Josephine Brunton on May 4, 1947. She survives.
Also surviving are daughter, Carol (Leslie) Leach, East Peoria; son, Kenneth (Christena) Ely, Titusville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Brian (Ann) Leach, Orland Park; Julie (Nicholas) Powers, Dunlap; Erich (Sara Goldberg) Ely, New York; four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hayley Powers, Grace and Aidan Leach.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Evelyn Starker.
Donald graduated from Cornell High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Donald retired from farming in the Cornell area and was a member of Cornell United Methodist Church; life member, Cornell American Legion Post 752; 37th Division Veterans Association; Livingston County Farm Bureau; and life member, Livingston County War Museum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cornell United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
