CARLOCK — Fred R. Gent, 75, of Carlock, passed away Thursday (Jan. 2, 2020) at home after a year-long battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
He was an incredible father, husband, grandpa and friend. He will be missed dearly by his loving family and all who he touched throughout his accomplished life. He is survived by his wife, Winnie; children, Matt Gent (Courtney Jenkins) and Jessica (Dave) Ryder; and his beloved grandchildren, Owen, Adeline, Emma and Shiras.
Fred was born into the farm life on Aug. 14, 1944, in Keota, Iowa. He learned hard work, the Catholic faith and genuine character from his parents, brothers and sister. He wasn't meant to stay on the farm, but always stayed close, working his entire life in agribusiness and commodities.

Fred moved from Iowa City to Central Illinois to follow a promising career. He spent his entire life doing what he adored, merchandising grain, working with farmers and helping others. He woke early every day with a smile and rarely missed a day of the job he loved. He made lifelong friends through his work and has cherished them all his life.
Fred enjoyed vacations with Winnie, Cubs games with his daughter Jessica, trips to Vegas with his son Matt, the Iowa Hawkeyes and every moment he could have with his grandchildren. Above all, his family meant everything to him. In August 2019 Fred and Winnie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. May God hold him in the palm of his hand.
His memorial service will be at noon Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Cremation rites have been accorded.
