BLOOMINGTON — Mary G. Hayes, 94, of Bloomington, passed away at 6:37 p.m. Friday (March 15, 2019) at OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.
Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Bloomington, with the Rev. Jeffrey Stirniman officiating. Interment will immediately follow services at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, with a prayer service beginning at 3:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
She was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Piper City, daughter of Henry and Vera Meisenhelder English. She married Melvin J. Hayes on Sept. 14, 1946, in Bloomington. He preceded her in death on March 4, 2002. She was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Surviving are three children, Joan (Doug) Meyers, Normal; David (Lynn) Hayes, Bellevue, Neb.; and Tom (Sharon) Hayes, Bloomington; and eight grandchildren, Brian (Lindsey) Hayes, Megan (Joe) Hardy, Amy (Kevin) Arnold, Erin (Sean) Craig, Angie (Kevin) Braucht, Stacy (Bruce) Haas, Stephanie Meyers and Ryan Meyers. Also surviving are 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Don (Bev) English, Kempton; one sister, Theo Redenius, Gilman; and one sister-in-law, Bernadette English, LaHogue.
Directly out of college, Mary worked at Mennonite Hospital as a lab and X-ray technician. While working at the hospital, she met her husband, with his drug store being only one block away. When she and Mel started their family, Mary stayed home to raise her children and tend to the household chores, but continued to help at Hayes Drug Store, the family business. Later, she worked for 13 years as a secretary and receptionist at McLean County Center for Human Services before retiring.
