DANVERS — Robert Eugene Hartzold, 86, of Danvers, passed from his earthly life on Thursday (March 14, 2019) surrounded by his family at the family farmstead where he had lived and farmed all his life.
Robert was born on May 11, 1932, to Edward and Ruth Steele Hartzold in Danvers. He married Marian Schertz, the love of his life, on Feb. 9, 1957.
Robert was a member of the Danvers Lion's Club and Danvers Emergency Ambulance and Rescue Service Board of Trustees. He assisted with the establishment of the Olympia School District and was a supporter of the McLean County Sportsmen's Association. He served many years on the Danvers Fire Department as the assistant chief. Supporting the HOOAH (Healing Of Our American Heroes) was his passion in his later years.
He is survived by his wife, Marian, and eight children, Joe (Sharon) Hartzold, Rod (Kathy) Hartzold, Beth (Randy) Uphoff, Teresa (Stuart) Shaver, Susan (Andrew Jumonville) Hartzold, Julie Hartzold, Jeannie (Jim) O'Neill, and Kathy (Randy) Clark. Also surviving are his 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Lucille; sister, Lois Hayes; and brothers, Joseph, Richard, and Larry.
The family cabin "Grandpa Bob" built is a lasting legacy to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was nothing he enjoyed more in life than spinning tales and sitting on his gator watching children, family, and friends enjoy life at the cabin.
A private family Mass will be held. A celebration of life with family and friends will be held at the family cabin at a later date. Memorials may be made to Danvers Fire and Rescue. Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
