100 years ago

Aug. 11, 1918: The school board is remodeling the old BHS building on Monroe Street. It will eventually become Jefferson School. Expenses are up to $30,000 so far. (An arsonist burned the old school in 1932. The new Jefferson School eventually became District 87 offices.)

75 years ago

Aug. 11, 1943: Some of the gun stocks used by our fighting forces come from a walnut forest near Fairbury. Logs from those trees were shown being loaded into an open freight car in today’s paper.

50 years ago

Aug. 11, 1968: A Normal man and woman were killed instantly in a head-on auto accident near Wheeling, W.Va. They were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Austin of 105 E. Willow St. The second driver was hospitalized in fair condition. No charged have been filed.

25 years ago

Aug. 11, 1993: The Illinois Supreme Court will decide the Wapella School District’s future. A citizens’ group successfully petitioned to dissolve the district. But school board attorneys argue enough signers have changed their minds to pull the total below 50 percent.
