100 years ago

May 14, 1918: At 99, Jonas Sill was the oldest man in McLean County and had a clear memory. He died last night, after sinking for several weeks and suffering eight years of blindness. He farmed near Danvers since 1857 but had to give it up and later move to the village in 1904.

75 years ago

May 14, 1943: The biggest military parade since World War I wound through downtown Bloomington tonight in front of a crowd of 40,000. The visiting Army band was conducted by Sgt. E. B. Schlimovitz, formerly of 1216 E. Jefferson St., Bloomington.

50 years ago

May 14, 1968: Well-known Bloomington librarian Clara Kessler died at age 74. She was a children’s librarian, author, poet and playwright, whose works achieved some renown. She also gathered historic writings and put them in a work called “Home Town in the Corn Belt.”

25 years ago

May 14, 1993: Jenny Tripses of Peoria will be the new principal at Oakland School next year. She’ll replace Glen Newton, who is retiring. And, the PTO is planning a reception for outgoing BHS principal Bill O’Neal. He’s taking a similar job at Thornton Township High School at Harvey.
