I recently attended a special meeting of the finance committee for the Livingston County Board.
The board, in an effort to quash public support for the Livingston County Community Health Care Program advisory referendum, placed a binding tax referendum on the November 2018 ballot. The voters passed both referenda items by an overwhelming margin.
Unfortunately, the board cannot or will not implement either of these referenda without first placing two additional referenda items on the April ballot. The decision to place these referenda items will be voted on by the full board at a special meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 10. These proposed referenda items, if passed, will enable the board to increase taxes and reinstate the Livingston County Community Health Care Program. However, this can all be avoided by simply adjusting the budget to provide funding for the program.
I encourage (urge) you to call your board representatives and tell them to make a motion to amend the budget. I also urge you to attend the special board meeting at the old courthouse on the square, downtown Pontiac.
