As a 25-year resident of Bloomington-Normal, I have always supported our law enforcement officers. I have had family in law enforcement and have family who desire to pursue law enforcement as a career. I have taught my children to respect, appreciate and pray for those who live to serve and protect us.
However, the testimony that I heard from two Bloomington Police detectives during the Matt Everly trial was shocking, appalling, saddening and downright frightening. The lack of competent and thorough investigation into the events that lead to an innocent man being charged with 11 counts of child abuse, that could have sent him to prison for life, was unbelievable.
After only interviewing two individuals, the assumption by the detectives that they had their man and that their investigation was over, when it should have just been beginning, should be of utmost concern to every citizen of this community. I hope that there is a thorough investigation into how this police investigation was conducted, and that reforms will result because no one should have to endure the nightmare that this man and his family did.
I am thankful that when the complete lack of evidence was finally brought to trial that Matt Everly was found innocent of all 11 charges. But these are charges I believe would never have been brought if only two Bloomington Police detectives had thoroughly done their jobs.
