Have you noticed that in the last five years and a little before, there has been a fad for men to wear unshaven faces or full-length beards?

I don’t have a computer so I just thought I would look up “beard” in my 1963 World Book encyclopedia.

At that time the beard was not fashionable in the USA, Canada, Australia and many European countries. Alexander the Great ordered his soldiers to shave because their enemies in battle might seize the men by their beards. In the 1800s, a bushy beard with long side whiskers along with goatees and a mustache were a fad. The long beard and curly mustache were grown by a Navy commander during a year’s stay in the Antarctic. Really, the pictures were very amusing. I add this, that Amish allow long beards after men get married.

I guess men can wear beards if their wives allow. I’m very much in favor of keeping shaven. Just recently I found out the reason men want to be fashionable and why it’s called a fad. I found out, actually, in the comics, what this fad is called: “movie stars’ stubble-look.”
