Thank you for the excellent issues recently, but no mention of Lend-Lease and World War II.

After the evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940, Winston Churchill said to Americans, in 1941, “Give us the tools and we will finish the job.” You did and some of those tools were food stuffs - dried egg, dried milk, pork sausage meat and Spam.

Government printed a leaflet telling how to cook the rationed dried egg. Monty Python had a “song” of one word only. Spam was that word; it was the one meat thing, rationed, available. Offal was there, not rationed, if you could find it. I was at school and college, training for teaching, for the duration.

The last payment for the loan was made on Jan. 1, 2006.
