Living in a democracy with freedom of the press is a privilege that most people in the world do not enjoy. Hard-working journalists have uncovered events like the My Lai massacre, the illegal cover-up of Watergate and the Pentagon papers that told the story of how Nixon prolonged the Vietnam war to help his reelection.
History is full of power-hungry leaders who have suppressed or completely controlled the free flow of information. Hitler is one of the most noted, but we have had aggressive attacks on our press from Nixon and now Trump. Both of them attacked the press and tried to hide the truth.
Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning found that our drones were killing civilians. Without their research, the military would have continued and we would never have known. We have to continue to work to keep our freedom of the press.
