Letters to the editor

I was very sorry to hear the recent news that Jeff Schwartz was stepping down in his leadership role of the McLean County Diversity Project after 19 years. Many of us throughout McLean County have proudly and enthusiastically supported the Project because of Jeff’s leadership and selfless dedication to the youth in our county.

The Diversity Project’s goals are so important in working with our youth, teaching not only about our diverse world, but the impact one can have on society “through the power of selfless devotion.”

Organizing the Diversity Project surely has been a full-time job for Jeff, as so many volunteer efforts are. The Project scholars have had this amazing opportunity to travel not only around the country but around the world. They have been able to go on trips that have been life-changing. Their recent trip to Israel is just one example of an incredible opportunity for these young people to see a part of the world, meet and interact with community leaders and students in Israel and witness firsthand what happens in the world around them in real time.

I’ve been supporting the Diversity Project for several years, both personally and as county clerk. Many of the scholars have served as election judges and election technical assistants and were exceptional assets to the election process with their dedication and professionalism.

We know Jeff well enough to know he never expects thanks but we thank him nonetheless. Congratulations on a job well done.

Kathy Michael, Bloomington
