I would like to commend Kevin Moore who recently was interviewed on WGLT radio. Kevin alerted our community to the lack of a residential hospice option in the Bloomington-Normal area. Kevin, a clinical psychologist, highlighted the lack of placement options when individuals who have advanced medical conditions (such a cancer) can no longer be adequately cared for in a home environment or by periodic visits by hospice workers. Hospitalization is often the only viable alternative.
In many instances the alternative of a residential hospice can provide necessary, more comfortable and high quality of life care for individuals as they approach their last stages of life. I encourage health care workers in our local medical facilities to continue to engage in conversations about how residential hospices can become a reality in our community.
